more weird instant messages

One “side effect” of the time I spent in Africa is a moderately annoying “proposal problem”.  See, to Africans (African men in particular), my white American skin equals a green card.  The vast majority of Africans just really desire to live in the United States, but immigration is much more challenging since 9/11.  The easiest [...]

Family lunch

Written at 2pm, Saturday June 6.
Hello blog. I don’t know if this will go through, because I’ve discovered the cell service is pretty flukey around Funk amd Wilcox. Luckily our hotel is in Minden, and I can get a pretty reliable EDGE signal there. So it WILL get sent eventually.
I hope my cell phone battery [...]

breakfast at the firehouse

One of the primary reasons we spent a night at Ruth’s cabin was so that we could go to her volunteer fire department breakfast.  This breakfast is a fundraiser and is held every year on Memorial Day.  The community gathers at the firehouse, and many people travel in from outside communities (like Colorado Springs or [...]

illnesses… where I’ve been

It’s not a great excuse but it’s the truth.  I can’t believe how sick I’ve been this week, or even this whole winter.  This has got to be the fifth or sixth cold I’ve had this year, and this one is a real doozy.  Last week I had no voice, and this week my voice [...]

the pirate update

First an update on me: I’m better but not yet well.  My voice is back, but it takes a lot of energy for me to talk and if I talk too much, it makes my throat hurt.  BUT I have lots more energy than yesterday, so I’m definitely on the mend.  Also tomorrow is Good [...]

sugar tax? i don’t think so!

I just heard on the news that they are considering a tax on sugar- sugary snacks and sugary beverages.  I think that just may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
A tax on cigarettes makes sense to me.  Smoking is directly linked to lung cancer and a world of other health problems.  A tax on [...]

weird weird weather

On Friday night, our local weather forcasters were predicting a LOT of snow overnight- between four and twelve inches, depending on who you asked, which is definitely a lot of snow for late march in Missouri.  In fact, my parents and I went grocery shopping on Friday night, along with the rest of Kansas City.  [...]

fast food

I hate how much I love fast food.
I live in a pretty good sized suburban community, and we have all kinds of fast food restaurants.  There is McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Arby’s, Fazolis, Hardees, Chick Fil A.  There are more “specialized” restaurants like Panera Bread or Chipotle.  There are “local” restaurants like Hi Boy or [...]

kc rep and california pizza kitchen

This afternoon, my parents and I went to a production of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Kansas City Repertory Theater.  My dad got the tickets for free through some kind of deal at his job, although they regularly run from $25-$45, I think.  The show was excellent, though of course I can’t exactly say [...]

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I hope your days were filled with food, family, and fun!
We have so many things to be thankful for, and this holiday is a wonderful time to remember how blessed we are.
Obviously – as I’m sure you can tell – I had a little “feng-shui-theme” attack.  I’m actually not a big fan of this theme, [...]
