text messaging

Over the past week, I’ve been dealing with a lot of cell phone issues- just sorting out some billing issues and answering some questions for my future phone and so forth. One thing I discovered is that, because I’ve been with my phone company so long, I am totally blessed to have an awesomely cheap text messaging plan- 200 messages for $5 a month.

Now you have to understand, first of all, that I don’t do a whole lot of text messaging. I’m not one of these people who communicates with all my friends via text. There are only a handful of people who receive messages from me (or, generally, send messages TO me). Usually when I text, it’s a very quick message- like, “Hey, u wanna meet at Starbucks or Panera?”, or maybe “Here’s a link to a story about ***, thought you’d like it”. There are a few people that I will get into a semi-conversation with, and I don’t mind them at all. These are my friends. Because I’m not a frequent texter, those 200 messages have been more than enough for me for quite some time now.

Lately, though, I’ve been contacted via text by a few people who, well… these are not people who I’m particularly close to. They are friends of friends. I know them, but only on the most superficial level imaginable.

Well, these people text me, and their messages are clearly rambling and conversational. They want to go back and forth and use up oodles of my precious messages, without ever really saying anything.

So how do you tell someone, via text message, to shut up?
