tiny cars and tiny houses

Tonight on the world news, I saw a story about this two-wheeled two person vehicle.  It’s based on the Segway and intended to be an urban/commuter vehicle.

I think there could be a lot of potential in this, but it reminds me of the same vulnerability I see in tiny houses- security.  I’ve actually looked at tiny houses before.  They look really neat, and in some ways I think I would really enjoy living in one.  There are a lot of logistical issues that make it very unlikely that I will ever live in one, but between the price and the size, I’m fascinated by these structures.

However, all else aside, the number one reason I will (most likely) never live in one of these is security.  My posessessions do not run cheap.  Yea, I admit it- but chances are, if you are reading this, you are at least somewhat the same.  See, my posessions include a couple of computers and a lot of electronics.  That’s almost counter-intuitive with the tiny houses, since the original intent of a tiny house was to have a low impact on the environment.  I agree, to an extent, that it’s good to impact the environment as little as possible, but that’s not the primary reason I would choose a tiny house.  And, as selfish as it sounds, I’m not willing to give up all or even most of my electronics.

My slightly-paranoid mind can easily imagine a criminal coming along with a solid truck and hauling away my whole house, with all of my posessions inside.  If I was to lose everything I owned- well, I just can’t even imagine that.  I know that happens to people all the time, due to fire or natural disaster, but I just can’t imagine how devastating that would be.

I imagine the same problem with the tiny cars.  If you had an enclosed garage, I suppose that wouldn’t be a problem, but if you have an enclosed garage, chances are you do not live in an urban area- the area these cars are designed for.  If you have to park on the street or in the parking lot, I can easily imagine someone coming along and stealing this car, either by hot-wiring it or by (again) hauling it off with a truck.

Theft prevention makes it so hard to be environmentally conscious!

OR, you could just live in a house like this: http://www.simondale.net/house/index.htm
and ride a bike / walk everywhere! ;)
That’s one of the things I’m most looking forward to while in Sweden- everyone rides bikes, it’s the norm and it even beats the tiny cars hehe.
