Tonight I found an article about a Pennsylvania woman who has been arrested after trying to sell “gothic kittens” with ear, neck, and tail piercings.  The kittens are now in the custody of the SPCA and the woman will almost certainly face charges.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with several students and coworkers at a junior high a couple of weeks ago.  One of the students was telling us about her cat, whom they had adopted from an animal shelter, and who had been abused as a kitten.  His previous owner had used the cat’s head and eyelids as an ashtray and would often burn the eyes with cigarettes.

The immediate response from one of my coworkers was, who thinks of this?  Who looks at a kitten and thinks, “I think I’ll put out my cigarrette on its eyelids”?  Who looks at a kitten and thinks, “I think I’ll pierce his ears/neck/tail”?  That’s just beyond my realm of comprehension.
