When I was younger I used to be really obsessive about weight and losing weight. It’s kind of sad, but that’s not really a surprise anymore, with the huge media pressure to be skinny. It seems that, as time goes by, it gets harder and harder to be a teenager. Girls (and boys) are using crash diets, diet pills, starvation, you name it, just to lose a bit more weight. I’ve even heard of some people using drugs to lose weight. I guess some drugs (like pot) give you the munchies, but other drugs – I think ecstasy, but maybe also heroin or cocaine? – can help you to eat less. Plus of course there’s the “old standby” – smoking. Who cares about sick, diseased, lungs, if you can lose a few pounds? What a shame. We need to be embracing kids exactly as they are, and embracing each other as we are. Not pressuring each other to change.
